January 31, 2020 was a momentous sunny day in Beverly Hospital history as the hospital unveiled new signage for the Joseph and Helen Koo Emergency Care Center. The Hospital named the center after Mr. Joseph and Dr. Helen Koo for their generous $1M donation. Dr. Helen Koo, Pediatrician, has been a Beverly Hospital Physician since 1982 and has been caring for the community’s infants and children for more than three decades. The Koo’s contribution will help Beverly Hospital continue to make important improvements to its facilities which will result in a higher level of quality and compassionate care for every patient.

On behalf of her and her husband, Dr. Koo delivered a heartwarming speech sharing why they donated to the Hospital and what they hope to achieve.

“Beverly Hospital serves thousands and thousands of patients every year. People come here not just from Montebello, but from surrounding areas…so, by donating to the Hospital, the money will reach out farther to help the people in the community. With the funds, the hospital can buy new state-of-the-art medical equipment so patients will get better care. Our thinking is that this is a more effective and efficient way to give back to the community.  If we were to do it on our own, we would not be able to achieve the same kind of result.” – Dr. Helen Koo

Beverly Hospital President and CEO Alice Cheng thanked the Koos. “Mr. and Dr. Koo, on behalf of the 40K patients who visit the Beverly Emergency Room each year, and 10K plus acute inpatients, I’m deeply grateful for your philanthropic giving. I’m also appreciative of your faith in the Board and Administration to carry out your commitment to the wellbeing of the community we serve. John F. Kennedy once said, ‘As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.’ I want you to know that Beverly will live by your generosity as we continue our mission for another 70 years and beyond!”

Dignitaries recognizing the Koos at the ceremony included State Senator Bob Archuleta, Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia, and a representative from the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis. Members of Beverly Hospital’s Board of Directors and Board of Trustees, hospital staff, family members of the Koos, and some of Dr. Koo’s patients were also present to rejoice with the Koos. The Hospital is grateful and thanks the Koos for their gracious gift.
