Baby-Friendly Celebration
Baby-Friendly Celebration

On February 14, 2017 the Regional Hospital Breastfeeding Consortium (RHBC) South, celebrated Beverly Hospital as one of the most recent hospitals to achieve Baby-Friendly designation.

After more than three years of hard work, Beverly Hospital has earned "Baby-Friendly" designation from Baby-Friendly USA, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United States Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The initiative’s goal is to improve health outcomes for mothers and babies through breastfeeding and immediate skin-to-skin bonding.

As part of the RHBC South consortium, Beverly Hospital staff shared some of the challenges and rewards that come with achieving the Baby-Friendly designation.  The consortium seeks to support all hospitals in achieving Baby-Friendly status.

Hospitals earn the designation after a rigorous on-site survey is completed. Among other requirements, the survey reviews hospital policies, staff training, and does on-site interviews with patients, nurses and physicians to ensure the hospital supports breastfeeding initiation and duration practices. Hospitals with Baby Friendly designation foster breastfeeding support by informing new moms of the benefits of breastfeeding; allowing the infant to room-in with mom to allow feeding on demand; and training staff and providers regarding best practices for breastfeeding support. The award is maintained annually.

"Our maternity staff is committed to helping mothers understand the many benefits of breastfeeding by creating a comfortable environment that provides support and guidance" shared Melissa Morita, Director of Maternal and Child Health. "We are thrilled to have obtained this designation" she added.

Decades of research indicate that breast-fed infants have lower rates of hospital admissions, ear infections, diarrhea, rashes, allergies, and other medical problems than bottle-fed babies, says the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
